Solving Problems, Creating Quality

All of life, in one way or another, is about solving problems and doing so in a way that creates lasting quality. Every challenge presents a choice. Apply a temporary fix that will resurface later, or invest the time and effort into a solution that brings permanent improvement.
Right now, that lesson is playing out in a very tangible way at the Anchorage office.
If you’ve spent any time upstairs recently, you’ve probably heard it, the steady, distracting tap-tap-tap of seagulls pecking at the windows that line the offices. What may seem like harmless behavior has real consequences. The noise interrupts meetings, breaks focus, and makes it difficult to get work done. More importantly, if left unaddressed, it signals something bigger: the seagulls see those windows as a potential nesting site. And once they establish a pattern, they will return year after year.
This is where problem-solving meets quality.

Window Pecking Seagull.
Melissa Thomas has been helping to figure out how to keep the seagulls from nesting at our windows, not just for this season, but permanently. The goal isn’t a quick fix. It’s a long-term solution that prevents the problem from coming back at all.
The likely solution? Clear plastic spikes that will line more than 100 feet of windows. They’re not particularly attractive, and at first glance, they might even feel like an eyesore. But quality solutions aren’t always the prettiest. They’re the ones that work.
Those spikes prevent the seagulls from landing. No landing means no nesting. No nesting means no annual return. And no return means quieter offices, uninterrupted meetings, and fewer distractions for everyone working upstairs.
When we step back, the comparison becomes clear. While the spikes may not be visually appealing, the ongoing disruption caused by pecking, nesting birds is far uglier. Noise that breaks concentration, frustrates teams, and slows productivity carries a cost that far outweighs the look of a preventative measure on the windowsill.
This scenario is a perfect example of the old truth: an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.
Rather than reacting year after year, removing nests, dealing with constant noise, and repeating the same cycle, we’re choosing to solve the root problem. We’re choosing prevention. And in doing so, we’re choosing quality: quality of work, quality of environment, and quality of experience for everyone in the office.
The seagulls may never realize it, but this is what thoughtful problem-solving looks like: seeing beyond the immediate inconvenience and investing in a solution that lasts.
