Summer in Ouzinkie is more than just a change in weather, it is a time when the community comes alive with purpose, tradition, and togetherness. As the days grow longer and the land and waters provide abundance, the village gathers to learn, to give back, and to honor both the past and the future.

This season brings exciting new programs, meaningful events, and countless opportunities for connection that strengthen the heart of our community.

Revitalizing Knowledge Through New Programs

One of the most inspiring highlights this summer is the introduction of new community-based programs that reconnect villagers with traditional knowledge and subsistence practices. Recently, Max Pyles led his first class on harvesting spruce tips and creating spruce tip salt.

This class was more than just a lesson; it was a reminder of the value held in the land around us and the importance of passing down knowledge across generations. Spruce tips, harvested at just the right time, are a seasonal gift, and learning how to preserve and use them creatively connects participants to both cultural traditions and sustainable living.

Programs like this empower community members to build skills, promote wellness, and strengthen relationships with the environment. They also create a space where elders, knowledge holders, and younger generations can come together, ensuring that traditions continue to thrive.

Caring for Our Land and History

Summer is also a time to give back to the places that have given us so much. The graveyard cleanup is one of the most meaningful acts of service we participate in as a community.

Caring for the resting places of loved ones is a tradition rooted in respect and remembrance. It ensures that those who came before are never forgotten and that their legacies remain visible and honored. Working together on this shared responsibility reinforces a sense of unity and collective care.

Similarly, the Monks Lagoon cleanup reflects commitment to protecting and preserving the natural environment. The lagoon is not only a beautiful part of our landscape but also an important area for spiritual reflection and rejuvenation. Coming together to clean and care for this space, demonstrates stewardship of the land and waters that sustain us. These efforts help protect local ecosystems while also teaching younger generations the importance of responsibility and remembrance of St Herman.

Monks Lagoon holds deep cultural and historical significance for Ouzinkie and is closely connected to St. Herman, one of Alaska’s most beloved Orthodox saints. St. Herman lived and carried out his ministry on nearby Spruce Island in the late 1700s and early 1800s, where he dedicated his life to caring for others, protecting Native people, and living simply off the land. The waters around Monks Lagoon reflect this legacy, as the area is tied to the monks who followed his teachings and to the spiritual history of the region. Today, it remains a place of reflection, respect, and connection to the enduring presence of St. Herman in the community.
